vision for the future of the naval postgraduate school

In order to best educate and prepare NPS students for 21st century warfare, a modern, state-of-the art, educational venue is required. The Naval Innovation Center at NPS, will enable multi-disciplinary, project-based learning that creates warfighting solutions at the speed of relevance.
The Naval Innovation Center at NPS will provide a capability unavailable elsewhere in the DOD for industry and academic partners to work side-by-side with NPS' 1500+ operational students and expert faculty to solve the unique challenges facing the DOD in a collaborative, applied and classified setting. The facility will enable concept to capability through the latest technologies to prototype, iterate, test and deliver solutions into the hands of the warfighter at speed and scale.

Combining the latest in architectural initiatives and immersive technology, the Naval Innovation Center at NPS will be an incubator for advanced warfighting solutions up to the classified level. NPS is at the nexus of academia, industry and the DOD making the organization the ideal place to develop, foster and lead a culture of innovation within the Department of Defense. Investing in the Naval Innovation Center today will yield highly impactful warfighting dividends, essential to U.S. security in the 21st century.

STRENGTHEN NPS CORE
NPS’ core curricula must develop the technical competencies necessary for mid-career professionals in their primary warfighting duties. Faculty will have more flexibility to develop curricula that is modular, accessible and pushing the edge of pedagogical innovation.
ENHANCE NPS COMPETITIVENESS
Advanced new technologies, not available anywhere else in the DOD, will provide unique problem-solving capabilities for multidisciplinary teams of military professionals, industry and academia.
INCREASE NPS IMPACT
NPS will be fully optimized as the Department of the Navy’s applied research university by accelerating concepts to capability, enabling rapid iteration and complementing where the Navy is focusing its R&D Investment.
"This will serve as a premier military education facility tailored to innovation and experimentation, serving as a technology resource for Navy and Marine Corps warfighting development commands, as well as a go-to partner of the defense industrial base, the technology sector, and academia."
– Secretary of the Navy Mr. Carlos Del Toro on the Naval Innovation Center at NPS, Dec 8. 2022

The
Naval Postgraduate School

The Naval Postgraduate School offers world-class graduate degree programs to eligible U.S. military students, international students, and DOD civilian employees. These experienced warfighters work alongside expert faculty on interdisciplinary technologies to solve today’s toughest challenges facing the military, while ensuring the technological leadership of tomorrow’s uniformed services.

The Naval Postgraduate School is focused on becoming the Nation’s leading institution for defense higher education and applied research, delivering transformative solutions and innovative leaders for decisive advantage. As a part of this effort, the NPS Foundation engaged Applied Minds (AMI) to support the creation of a forward-leaning vision for the school, and to design an innovative facility to turn that vision into reality.

The Naval Innovation Center at NPS

THE FUTURE OF WARFARE IS CHANGING.
Tomorrow’s conflicts will be more integrated, autonomous, and agile than any in our history. Already, our nation’s adversaries exploit the seams between domains to disrupt and preempt effective action. This myriad of threats requires the US military to be able to deter and defeat enemies in multiple domains: sea, sub-sea, air, land, space and cyber. Victory in multi-domain battle, across the range of military operations, requires naval forces manned, trained and equipped to achieve competitive overmatch against our foes. The divisions that may have once served to professionalize the force now hinder the ability of the Department of Defense to integrate complex systems to dominate a distributed battlespace.
THE US WILL WIN FUTURE WARS BY OUTTHINKING OUR ENEMIES.
The Naval Postgraduate School is the only graduate institution in the nation that serves, develops, and educates students with operational experience. NPS is one of the few places in the world where warfighters work alongside expert faculty on interdisciplinary new technologies to solve the toughest challenges facing the military. To build on its long legacy in graduating future leaders of the Navy and the joint forces, NPS is undergoing a transformation to produce students who adapt to a highly uncertain future and who can accomplish complex, multi-domain missions.
THIS VISION, SUSTAINED BY THE RIGHT PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT, WILL ENABLE NPS TO FORGE A FUTURE WHERE THE SCHOOL’S STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE CENTRAL TO THE SUCCESS OF THE NAVAL AND JOINT FORCES.

The Facility

The vision for the future of the Naval Postgraduate School includes a proposed, purposefully designed facility to accelerate development of research concepts from “idea to impact.” Deliberately designed to prioritize collaboration, hands-on experimentation, advanced analytics, autonomous technologies, increasingly classified work and immersive demonstrations, this facility will be optimized to create solutions with direct relevance to the fleet, while sustaining long-term thinking for the future of the Navy and broader Department of Defense.

The Naval Innovation Center reflects NPS’ commitment to ensure long-term energy security, efficiency and environmental stewardship as the Navy’s science and technology research university.

As research projects become more applied and classified, the Naval Innovation Center will enable students, faculty and partners to build virtually, prototype physically, and test and iterate rapidly, in order to deliver innovative solutions.

The design of the Naval Innovation Center at NPS was guided by the goals and strategies that the US Green Building Council laid out in its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The facility will use the latest architectural initiatives to ensure resource efficiency encompassing renewable energy systems and reusable and recyclable water and materials.

National Security is a Shared Responsibility.

The Naval Innovation Center at NPS relies on a network of stakeholders with equity in the technological advancement of our military, a transformation in professional military education, and our Nation maintaining an intellectual and technological edge over our adversaries. As a jointly-resourced initiative, the Naval Innovation Center will require funding from government entities as well as private donations and corporate partners to outfit the facility with state-of-the-art technology. The Naval Postgraduate School Foundation has invested over $2 Million in the planning and development of the Naval Innovation Center vision and schematic designs.
